Two eligible NC&nbsp;State graduate students were awarded funding for travel occurring July through December 2025. His research explores the long-term health impacts of policy change prompted by opportunity windows that emerge in the wake of disruptive events (particularly Hurricanes) in routinely-disrupted environments. Barrett earned her Bachelors from MEAS and gained experience as a research technician before enrolling in the graduate program working with Dr. Astrid Schnetzer in the Plankton Ecology Lab. Her research focuses on the spatial and temporal dynamics of Harmful Algal Blooms. She aims to advance our understanding of the connections between the environment, algal activity, and animal and human health in both freshwater and marine systems. Her work has included studying both algal dynamics and food web accumulation of toxins in relation to anthropogenic drivers, both short-term and long-term processes such as river discharge events and climate change.
