Graduate Certificate In Participatory Sciences

NC State is a recognized leader in the field of citizen science and other participatory sciences – the range of approaches in which science and society co-produce new knowledge. Many disciplines have their own forms of participatory research, and these research methods can be an effective way to gather data for complex and widespread challenges, such as those central to global One Health.

The Participatory Sciences Certificate was developed in partnership between the Citizen Science Campus and the Global One Health Academy. This interdisciplinary certificate trains graduate students to address pressing global issues through collaboration with the public on scientific research. With instruction in competencies related to public science, science communication, data management and visualization, and informal science education, this certificate emphasizes interdisciplinary thinking, problem-solving, and research; global awareness and cultural competency; and viewing scientific solutions through a holistic lens that considers environmental justice, equity and sustainability, and long-term benefits and impacts.

Students completing the certificate will be prepared to:

  1. Engage various segments of the public in scientific inquiry and collaboration

  2. Understand data ethics, management, and visualization

  3. Be competent in equity of science access

Any student with a Bachelor’s Degree and interest in Participatory Science may be admitted into the certificate. Click here for more admission information.
