Raghavendra Amachawadi
Bio
Dr. Raghavendra (Raghu) Amachawadi is an Associate Professor of Food Animal Therapeutics in the Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University. His research applies a Global One Health framework to address antimicrobial resistance, food safety, and infectious disease risks at the intersection of animal, human, and environmental health.
His program integrates microbiology, genomics, molecular epidemiology, and microbial ecology to examine factors influencing antimicrobial resistance among commensal and pathogenic bacteria in food animal production systems, spanning scales from the molecular to population and policy relevant levels. Using epidemiological and ecological approaches across cattle, swine, and poultry systems, his work quantifies the emergence, dissemination, and persistence of resistant bacteria within interconnected populations of animals, food products, and humans.
A central focus of Dr. Amachawadi’s research is the development and evidence based evaluation of antibiotic alternatives, including probiotics, phytochemicals, bacteriophages, and immune modulating strategies, and cost effective management practices that support sustainable production while reducing reliance on medically important antibiotics. In alignment with GOHA’s mission, he is committed to interdisciplinary education, workforce development, and global capacity building through mentorship, training, and international collaboration to translate science into scalable, policy relevant One Health solutions.
