Bio
Nilda Cosco, PhD is Research Professor, College of Design, NC State University, Co-Founder and Director of Programs at the Natural Learning Initiative (NLI). She holds a PhD in Landscape Architecture (University of Edinburgh/Heriot Watt). Cosco conducts research, manages training programs, and directs the comprehensive programs Preventing Obesity by Design (POD). Research findings are used to guide evidence based best practice indicators, policy, design assistance, professional development, and dissemination of information. Latest projects include the management of childcare outdoor environment projects for healthy development (birth – 5yo), professional development certificates, and education modules for community colleges.
She led the USDA-NIFA randomized controlled trial (RCT) Childcare Outdoor Learning Environments as Active Food Systems: Effectiveness of the Preventing Obesity by Design (POD) Gardening Component (2018-2023).
In 2022, Cosco was inducted into the North Carolina University Academy of Outstanding Faculty in Extension and Engagement.
