About Harry
Harry Ervin is a fourth-year PhD student in the Plant Biology Program at NC State. His research sits at the intersection of plant biology, mycology, and biogeochemistry, with a focus on sustainable agricultural systems. He studies how plant-associated root endophytic fungi influence nutrient dynamics and how these interactions vary across plant phylogeny and nutrient contexts. Ultimately, his goal is to develop strategies to integrate and potentially stack beneficial fungi with other sustainable farming tools to reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers.
He comes from a diverse professional background, with experience in local politics, journalism, agriculture, and small business. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Biology and Biochemistry from Calvin University, conducted research at Michigan State University, and later worked in industry in sustainable agricultural biotechnology. These experiences shape his approach to science, grounding his research in both practical application and broader societal impact.
As a Global One Health Fellow, he is excited to engage with an interdisciplinary community that considers the connections between environmental, agricultural, and human health. He looks forward to expanding his perspective and contributing to solutions that operate across systems and scales.
