Advising

Scheduling Appointments

Students enrolled in the EVN 100 course are required to meet with their assigned academic advisor at least twice in the fall semester. Your advisor will provide information regarding the scheduling of these meetings. We encourage students to schedule additional appointments, visit the advisor’s posted office hours, or email them as needed. Please note that you will receive important advising information through the required course, ENV 100: Student Success in Environmental First Year.

Our Advising Philosophy

We believe advising is a partnership between you and your advisor that is grounded in frequent communication regarding personal goals, self-knowledge and information about majors, careers and university policies. Advisors do not “prescribe” answers or majors for you; rather, we prompt you with the questions and resources you need to explore your unique interests, abilities and values and to set and reach your personal, academic and career goals. While academic advising is a collaborative process, you’re ultimately responsible for your educational experience.

Student Learning Outcomes

As a result of your advising relationship, you will be able to:

  • Successfully transition into and navigate through your undergraduate experience.
  • Engage with the campus community and resources.
  • Demonstrate and apply critical thinking skills.
  • Develop an educational plan for achieving your academic goals.
  • Understand and utilize the academic tools available to students needed for academic progress; including Degree Audit, Semester by Semester, and Pack Planner.
  • Take responsibility for the decisions and actions/inactions that affect your educational progress. You will become knowledgeable of various campus resources.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of academic responsibilities as well as extracurricular activities.

Expectations of Students

  • Provide a safe space in which the student can share their thoughts, aspirations, concerns and interests.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and university regulations.

  • Refer the student to other appropriate resources as needed and follow through with actions agreed upon in advising appointments.
