Larry Andrew Nielsen was born August 29, 1948 in Chicago, Illinois. He married Sharon K. Florini of Sullivan, Illinois in 1970. They have two daughters, Jennifer and Amanda.

Serves as the Chief Academic Officer for the university which has ten colleges, a division of undergraduate academic programs, the graduate school, enrolls nearly 30,000 students and employs over 1800 faculty members. Works integrally with the chancellor, executive officers, and deans to administer and facilitate effective, efficient, and high quality programs and program-delivery at every level of the university.
