Update on Merger of Divisions of Student Affairs and Undergraduate Academic Programs

Date:    December 12, 2011

From:   Warwick Arden, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor

To:       University Council

Subj:    Merger of Divisions of Student Affairs and Undergraduate Academic Programs

The Implementation Team for the merger of the divisions of  Student Affairs and Undergraduate Academic Programs submitted its report to me on October 30, 2011.  (See http://www.provost.ncsu/governance/task-forces/dssp/implementation.php for the final report.)  Since that time I have consulted with faculty, students, staff and administrators across campus and I am pleased to announce that I have accepted the recommendations in the October 30th report with the following modifications:

(i)  Division Name Change
The name of the new division will be changed from the Division of Student Services and Programs (DSSP) to the Division of Academic and Student Affairs (DASA).  The new name is consistent with terminology used by UNC General Administration.  (See http://www.northcarolina.edu/aa_outreach/staff.htm.)

(ii)  Senior Leader Title Change
The title of the senior leader of the new division will be changed from Senior Vice Provost for Student Services and Dean of Undergraduate Programs to Vice Chancellor and Dean for Academic and Student Affairs.

(iii)  Subdivision Name Changes
Campus Life will be renamed Residential Life. Health, Wellness and Student Development will be renamed Student Development, Health and Wellness.

(iv)  Change in Location of Programs
Student Leadership and Engagement Programs (CSLEPS, Student Government, Student Organization Resource Center, Union Activities Board, Student Media, and the Chaplains' Cooperative Ministry), and Student Legal Services will move to the Student Development, Health and Wellness subdivision.  Mike Giancola will serve as Associate Vice Provost for these programs while remaining Director of CSLEPS.

Attached is a document summarizing the organizational plans for the Division of Academic and Student Affairs.

We will start a search for the Vice Chancellor and Dean for Academic and Student Affairs immediately.  I am pleased to announce that Dr. Jayne Fleener, Dean of the College of Education, has agreed to chair the search.  Dr. Katie Perry will be my office liaison for the search.

I would like to thank the members of the Implementation Team for their hard work.  It is my firm belief that the Division of Academic and Student Affairs will be a critical component in helping us to enhance the success of our students.
