College of Sciences Update - Academic Programs & Personnel
Memo from the Provost
Date: October 12, 2012
To: University Leaders
From: Warwick A. Arden, Provost & Executive Vice Chancellor
Subject: Update on College of Sciences - Academic Programs & Personnel
In my last update in August, I shared with you that forty-four tenured/tenure-track faculty in the departments of Biology, Microbiology, Genetics, and Environmental and Molecular Toxicology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) would be joining the new College of Sciences. Since then, the COS Academic Programs, Personnel & Policy (APPP) Implementation Team has prepared and presented recommendations to the COS Steering Committee regarding the future college affiliation of all academic programs and personnel associated with the four departments.
Lists indicating which academic programs and which personnel would transition to COS and which would remain in CALS were shared with the four departments. Duane Larick and I held two forums for the departments on October 2 where attendees were encouraged to ask questions, provide feedback and express any concerns. Individuals were also given the option to contact me or Dr. Larick directly. Minor revisions were made to the lists as a result of the feedback we received.
Brief summaries regarding the transition of academic programs and personnel FTEs (Full Time Equivalents) follow on the next two pages. A few notes regarding the information in this memo:
- The future college affiliations of the impacted academic programs are now finalized and implementation teams are moving forward with recommendations based on these affiliations.
- The FTE distributions only include individuals funded through state accounts.
- FTE totals are rounded to two decimal places and reflect current data as of October 10, 2012.
- Minor changes to FTE distributions between CALS and COS will be made through July 2013 and beyond as budget and finance conversations continue in this complex transition process.

More information on FTE distributions as of 10/10/12.
Many thanks to the APPP Implementation Team, Dr. Larick, Vicki Pennington, and the four department heads, Harry Daniels, Gerald LeBlanc, Eric Miller and David Threadgill, for their tremendous efforts in preparing and reviewing this information.
Next Steps
By early November, we will have more details about the financial implications of the redistribution of programs and personnel. I will provide another update once that information is available.
