Task Force on Review of Academic Programs
Charge
This task force has been created to expand on the preliminary work initiated earlier this year (see Toward Greater Effectiveness and Efficiency in Academic Courses and Programs), which led to the provost's recommendation (see Strategic Realignment Recommendations) that the University undertake a more comprehensive review of programs during the 2011-12 academic year.
The primary purpose of this review is to strengthen NC State’s academic programs overall by improving their vitality, effectiveness, and efficiency. The review will also produce metrics that NC State can use in the future to assess programs and to allocate resources equitably and strategically.
The provost has asked the task force to do the following:
- Recommend the metrics to be used in academic program review, including a wider range of evidence of program effectiveness than those used in spring 2011, which focused largely on enrollment and degree productivity.
- Once metrics have been established, assemble the data for all degree programs currently offered by NC State and identify areas that would benefit from additional attention.
- Make recommendations for strengthening academic programs through program consolidation, changes in focus, increasing support, phasing out, or taking no deliberate action.
The task force is expected to provide the campus community with an opportunity to provide input on the selection of metrics. In addition, departments and colleges housing programs identified for additional review will be invited to present program-specific information and to participate in development of strategies and solutions.
Timeline: The task force will deliver a set of recommendations to the provost by the end of the 2011-12 academic year.
